About Us

Mesa View Middle School is a very diverse middle school serving students in grades 6 - 8. Of our approximately 800 students, 22% receive free/reduced lunch, 11% are English Learners, 40% Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) students and 11% are identified as special education students. Mesa View is also the home of the District GATE magnet program and a shared SELPA, severely emotionally disabled program.

Our teaming model at the sixth grade level assists with students’ transition to middle school. Students have one teacher for English/Language Arts and Social Science and one for Math and Science. Students have the opportunity to experience a trimester exploratory wheel or participate in a beginning band class. 

Mesa View is proud to offer the WEB program, which stands for “Where Everybody Belongs.” WEB is a school orientation and transition program that welcomes 6th graders and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their middle school experience. Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, the program trains mentors from our 7^th and 8^th grade classes to be WEB Leaders. As positive role models, WEB Leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide new students to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to middle school and help facilitate 6^th grade success.

Mesa View Middle School follows a traditional schedule, where students have all of their classes every day. Daily classes are English/Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Science, Physical Education, and Elective. Classes meet for about 53 minutes and students see the same teachers every day. Students have the opportunity to focus on many different subjects for short periods of time. Students can establish a pattern to their day, making it easier for them to remember their classes and assignments.

Mesa View is proud of its students’ achievements. We believe much of the credit for this gain lies in our focus on standards-based curriculum and instructional strategies. Elective classes include exploratory wheels (art, computers, woodshop, current events), instrumental music, performing arts, robotics, yearbook, WEB, and 8th grade Spanish. These classes support and develop a variety of skills in students.

Listed below is a sampling of the wide variety of instructional programs offered:

GATE Magnet Program
The magnet program provides for the special needs and characteristics of gifted children. Students are grouped in core classes with other identified GATE students - high achieving non-identified GATE students are placed in an honors program. Teachers differentiate grade level state standards through instructional strategies and activities to challenge and develop students' thinking, reasoning and communication skills. The GATE mathematics program is accelerated one grade level. Entering the GATE program in 6th grade, students take Pre-Algebra, followed by Algebra I in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade.

Honors Program
Students who exhibit a high level of achievement in Language Arts may participate in the Honors Language Arts. The teachers enrich the grade level standards to challenge the students. Students are identified for this class based on Smarter Balanced English Language Arts Assessment scores, fluency levels, comprehension scores, District Benchmark scores, grades and teacher recommendations. Students must maintain at least a B grade in each class each trimester, have outstanding citizenship and work habits each trimester, as well as continue to score in an Advanced or high Proficient manner in all District and State assessments to continue in the program the following year. 

The Honors program is very competitive and each year students are re-ranked and the highest ranking students will be placed in honors ELA. Due to the ranking, each students’ record is reviewed based on the same criteria to fill the honors class.

Advanced Math
Mesa View strives to offer an advanced math program for students who are advanced in mathematics. These classes move at a faster pace and emphasize application of mathematical concepts.

Literacy Intervention Program
Literacy intervention is offered for students who are performing below grade level by more than two grades. Students' primary focus becomes literacy and striving to  improving their reading and writing skills. Our goal is to have these students within grade level prior to moving to high school.

Special Education Services
Mesa View hosts a wide variety of special education services including Resource Specialists, a Speech Therapist, and Special Day Classes. Our staff looks to blend services and classes as much as possible to maximize our students' experiences and our staffs' expertise.

Technology
With the assistance of our PTSO, Mesa View has been able to provide students with access to technology. Classrooms are equipped with a SMART board and projector, as well as a document camera. Two of our classrooms have ChromeBook carts with ChromeBooks provided by our district, and our PTSO has purchased an additional ChromeBook cart with 36 ChromeBooks that the entire school can utilize. The staff attends on-going trainings to maximize the use of these exceptional instructional tools. Currently we have two computers labs teachers may utilize. Our computer labs host Exploratory Wheels at all grade levels as well as provides a place for students to complete assignments when needed.
