English Learner Advisory Council

What is English Learner Advisory Council (ELAC) ? ELAC (English Learner Advisory Committee) in middle school serves the purpose of supporting students who are English learners (ELs) and ensuring that their educational needs are met. The committee is typically made up of parents, teachers, school staff, and sometimes students, and it focuses on:

  1. Advising on Programs and Services – ELAC provides recommendations to the school administration and district on programs that support English learners in acquiring English and succeeding academically.
  2. Reviewing School Plans – The committee reviews and gives input on the school's Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) to ensure English learners receive appropriate support.
  3. Encouraging Parent Involvement – ELAC encourages parents of English learners to participate in school activities, understand their rights, and become active partners in their children's education.
  4. Monitoring English Learner Progress – The committee discusses assessment results, reclassification criteria, and strategies to help EL students transition to fluency.
  5. Providing Feedback to the District – ELAC members can send representatives to the District English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC), which advises on district-wide policies for English learners.

Overall, ELAC plays a crucial role in advocating for English learners and ensuring they receive equitable access to education.
